A cursory glance at the presence of steampunk in social media
The term steampunk was coined by genre author K.W. Jeter in 1987 (Perschon, 2012). Primarily, it is a literary genre of science fiction and fantasy that reimagines history but with a twist (for more see:Definition). Many authors have drawn inspiration from the works of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne. The counterfactuality and futuristic design of steampunk comes heavily from HG. Wells’s 1895 novel,The Time Machine (Onion, 2008). The elements of advanced technology to complete a journey or adventure comes from the ideas with two of Jules Verne’s novels,Around the World in Eighty Days(1873) and20,000 Leagues Under the Sea(1872) (Onion, 2008). These ideas have merged to create the basis of the literary genre and the classifications of steampunk.
The art world of steampunk grew in the 1990’s as artists began to bring the ideas written in novels to the physical world. Fabricationand modification are two main areas of the physical art of steampunk. Those that fabricate, such as Molly Friedrich, Tim Hawkinson, and Arthur Ganson, use materials that visually fit into the style of steampunk to create new objects and sculptures. While sculptures take on a life of their own, modding relies heavily on the function of an existing object. Often times a guitar will be modded to become a steampunk guitar but it is still a guitar as it is not taken apart completely to create a new object altogether.
The foray into the world of steampunk cosplay stems from those steampunk societies that allow for steampunks to gather and act out the worlds that they imagine. These societies are primarily found in the United Kingdom and have quite a number of participants (Great British Steampunk Society,The Victorian Steampunk Society). While there are many steampunk societies in the United States (Pacific Northwest Steampunks), the majority of steampunk seen in the United States is found in the convention scene where costume play, cosplay, is frequent.
